Cambridge city centre bus only bit of road?

    Posted by Since 85 on 30/7/2020, 20:31:39

Anyone else had any recent experience trying to negotiate Cambridge city centre lately?

Pretty sure i'm going to get a ticket. Was on motorbike following road signs to city centre. Next thing i'm at a junction, can't go straight on it's prohibited for cars and motorbikes (red circle white background) only other option is turn left but that seems to only be for buses taxis and bicycles (blue circle white text/images). Had someone right behind me so had about 1 second to make a decision. Turned left and meandered through to other side of centre, other bridge and pulled in to side. Noticed signs going back other way also had the blue sign plus text sign underneath saying 'bus lane cameras' and also a time notice saying '10am to midnight'. So i'm guessung i'll get a fine in the post in the next few days. Bloody annoying, didn't see anything warning me before that junction.

Is it just me or is road signage getting really difficult to understand nowadays? Especially in town centres with haphazard temporary signage/restricted access with all the roadworks going on everywhere. Starting to become a nightmare venturing out on the roads lately!

      Unfortunately I'm afraid I think you'll get a fine.

Sorry to be bearer bad news

Canít help, but Cambridge is a total Nightmare... I used to deal with retail customers in most of East Anglia... the one place I had only one customer was Cambridge, just because it is totally non car friendly....
Was just not worth the effort.... London getting much the same...

I know exactly where you were I think, Cambridge is a bit of a nightmare and that's a really difficult and badly signed junction. They are - unfortunately - complete twats on traffic and parking offences and mishaps. Appeal and you'll get 'we understand but there's nothing we can do about it'.

There was a similar situation at a ludicrously badly signed junction in Manchester. Eventually a 'group action' (or some similar name) appeal was made and they had to repay 10,000+ fines - though only to those who read about it and applied, of course.

Cue the usual self righteous twats posting about this. I've got a 'bingo card' at the ready.

Hmm, will wait and see but fully expecting a fine. Will appeal but yes as you say they will prob dismiss as per my post below. The main point is that when driving you need time to process signage. It seems a lot of signage nowadays is completely devoid of that understanding.

I think the council there regard drivers and visitors as a cash cow.

But even the long term residents who I visit regularly there seem to get caught time and time again by badly signed roads and ever changing parking regulations.

If it's temporary, it's very likely to not have been properly ratified. If you get a summons, challenge it. They have to prove that you've committed an offence and rely heavily on people just coughing up.

Signage looked permanent not temporary. But in London coming back there were multiple temporary restrictions that don't seem to be signed until you are literally entering that area. Helped being on the bike as i could just do a swift u-turn but just a horrible set up. I'm still annoyed becahse of a ridiculous ticket i got few months back in Dalston where the road is width restricted but if you don't see the sign at start of road you will end up totally miffed why there are those yellow blue white road bollards directing you left into what appears to be parked vehicles, all parked except just enough space to counter intuitively go left round the bollard instead of straight through which is what i did. £65 fine and dismissed my points that it didn't make any sense at all.

The academics think there the only ones that exist in Cambridge. The just want to ban all non electric cars and cant understand why everyone cant cycle to work like they do ?

              That's bollox.

The roads in the historic centre can't cope with a city which has ballooned in vehicle numbers over recent years, much more to do with the new tech industries attracted to the city and 'Silicon Fen'. #### all to do with academics (beyond the fact that access to specialists may have attracted some of those businesses initially)

Cambridge will be fine as a city as it had tons of room to expand but the city it backwards cos of the university and all the influence and land they own.
