    Furlough Players League 1

Posted by Winger on 22/5/2020, 10:40:53

Listening to Sky Sports this morning and Wycombe along with a lot of other League 1 clubs have Furloughed all players.

Why have we not done this if the players have refused a temporary pay cut?

Is this an option for Championship clubs?

Clearly an option, but the employee has to agree to be furloughed and also, they are not allowed to do any work during that period, so the club would not be able to maintain / monitor their training schedule in lock down.

Seems to me the club have done the right thing by the players and applied no pressure on them to accept being furloughed

Maybe the players could do a favour in return

In the real world, of course, an employee will have to take furlough or lose his/her job. But in the sacred world of players contracts (which can otherwise be broken if a player wants to move) the player could no doubt sue if redundancy was forced on them

As far as I can see, you couldn't make players redundant - being made redundant would mean that the job no longer exists and you couldn't replace them.

            https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/consumer-affairs/furlough-scheme-rules-claim-pay-uk/

I thought the employer had to top up the pay but it appears not:

Will my employer have to top up my pay?

No, your employer is not legally required to pay out the remaining 20pc of your salary. However, they can do if they choose to.

To require this could defeat the effectiveness of the scheme, said Mark Hammerton of law firm Eversheds Sutherland. “For example, if a factory engages 500 staff, all on national minimum wage, the cost per month would exceed £100,000.”

Definitely not - that is the whole basis of the scheme so that employers can retain staff at no cost in order to protect jobs. I would guess that there are more on 80 per cent than on full pay.

I believe that the next phase of furlough starting on 1 August will see employees still receiving a minimum of 80 per cent but the Government would only fund, say, 60 per cent with the employer having to top up the pay up to at least 80 per cent so a 20 per cent contribution.

Someone on here said to me that the employer had to top it up so it was pointless to do so as the players earn so much more

I suspected that was wrong at the time.

The players would probably accept furlough with a full top up which would mean that the club could recover £2500 per player per month. The players would not be allowed to train or resume playing so it is too late now. This is why L2 clubs wanted the season scrapped so that they could furlough players, coaching staff etc.

Suddenly, with that little fact alone, things become much clearer.

                    Thanks.

We would be paying a lot more than 20% to top up their wages as well.

I believe the club are topping up the furloughed staff wages though to ensure they are still on a living wages

There's probably something particular to players' contracts that this doesn't apply. It's bollocks

Sounds like the majority of League 1 clubs have done it.

They will be on lower wages anyway and its now their close season for most - so they wouldnt normally monitor the players fitness in their time off

Also a lot of our players will be well above furlough pay (which i think its a maximum of £2500 per month). Most of our first team squad will probably be on more than that per week.

Also most people who agreed to be furloughed were faced with a prospect of furlough or redundancy . Players are better protected than that

Makes sense. Some mid table clubs were stating they couldn't afford to finish the season because it would mean un furloughing the players.
