    We are staying up?

Posted by EastEnder on 25/3/2020, 11:05:39

Conference and every league below it set to be voided.

Excl: The National League is set to shutdown the season by cancelling all remaining fixtures, which is set to have a significant knock on effect for the EFL and Premier League.

Not just saying this as we're in the relegation zone, but this really is the only sensible option. I know there will be winners and losers whatever the outcome, but to void a season and do it on PPG would be a farce. Look at the form Hull are in at the moment - they look a certainty for the drop but would stay up as things stand.

Having said that (and as much as I dislike them), I do think it's pretty harmless to award the title to Liverpool given the extreme circumstances there.

I think canceling the rest of the season, and adding this seasons points to the start of next season (whenever it eventually happens) is the most sensible option I've heard.

Even though alot of clubs, especially lower league, will have a very different squad to the ones used this season?

Or how about playing the remaining games from this season, before the “new” season starts. Add the points up in May 2021, so it’s a two point season total.

Also, given the extreme circumstances, why not increase every player’s contract by 12 months to get round the expiry in June thingy? Relegation and promotion penalties/bonuses could then still be relevant.

Four reasons - I am sure that there are loads more.

              1 Agents.

2 Even before this, some teams would have been looking to get some players off of the wage bill. This would be even more the case now.

3 Some players have probably already got deals in place with other clubs for 1 July, once their contract expires.

4 That is not how contract law works whatever the circumstances.

You can't unilaterally extend a contract (unless you have an option to) - the player would have to consent

Still the problem (in some divisions) of games in hand etc.

                Only realistically sensible option.
