    Advice needed....

Posted by Matt McHatter on 24/3/2020, 15:44:49

    ....global email from my employer:

"In order to strengthen our chances of surviving and in an effort to avoid laying people off we reached the very difficult decision to make a universal salary cut of 20% for all staff with immediate effect. I would be grateful if you would email me back confirming your agreement to the above."

Being chased for a response. What would you do?

What they are doing in this period by cutting 20% is using Government money contribution of 80%, hence they are not paying staff salaries at all.

I would go with it, but be careful when it all returns to normal that they don't go further and take the piss

There seems to be a major misunderstanding of this 80 per cent. The Government are not subsidising everyone's wages. It only applies if staff are laid off which the post says this reduction is intended to avoid.

My misunderstanding. Obviously the business still needs them working in this period at a cheaper rate, otherwise it would lay them off and they would receive the same

There are also other grants, loans and various tax deferments companies can apply from the government. Is the company on it's knees? I'm assuming they still want to keep going because there is money to be made, otherwise they would close. Not right that they can be better off because of a crisis.

It seems to be a very common misconception.

Unless you're in an industry where you can walk into another job right away (health probably the only one) then suck it up and keep your head down.

I'd even write an email supporting the decision and the company protecting jobs.

It's the wrong time to put a target on your back.

You might just have to take it on the chin for now, unfortunately.

Same happened to me in 2008. First 25 per cent and then another 25%.

That's the problem, if you accept 20 now there's nothing to stop trying to chop another 20 off in a couple of months.

Plus in 2008 the job market was probably much more buoyant than it is right now so it wasn't impossible just to move to another firm.

Ask them to prove they are going to have a 20% cut as well.

Are you part of a union?

We've had similar but our union is dealing with it.

No not in a union. Working from home and using my electricity and my telephone to help run their business whilst they can claim for 80% of salaries up to a £2,500.00 cut-off. Am I missing something?

You said that their reason is to avoid laying people off. They can't claim 80 per cent if you are still working.

my daughter was told by her boss yesterday that if she did not like the same cut she could always resign, she was shocked and will be moving on after the virus has finished.
