    BBC Look East

This morning they reported that Luton is the most polluted town in England/Britain? Shame we always seem to make the headlines for negative reasons.

Yeah but we’ve got the greatest football club in the world!

        From the website:

Luton does not have the worst levels of pollution. In fact, it is roughly middling and as the scientists said they would expect for a town of its size.

But where it does fall down, according to the study, is in shifting its pollution into the air so it becomes less concentrated.

The scientists found Luton fared particularly badly because its population is crammed into a fairly small, built-up, space.

I'm guessing the hills around trap grime too: that's certainly the case for North Manchester.

But neither, I feel sure, are anywhere as bad as our hosts on Saturday, the 'smog monsters'!

It would appear that Look East are sensationalizing this story a little.
They showed a traffic jam looking towards Bury Park from the Stuart Street dual carriageway.
Your point of the town being in a valley is spot on. I remember Luton having amazing thunderstorms that rubbled on for hours, stuck in the valley.
We also have an airport, diesel trains and the M1 to contend with.
If the match at Smoggie takes place on Saturday I will be certainly be packing my gas mask!

I'd imagine the location of the airport is a fairly big contributor. It's a huge part of our local economy with significant job provision, so we'll have to mitigate with cleaner engines in the future. Believe in the Science

Luton does have dirty air. And it is the fault of luton council. The have made congestion much worse in the town than it needs to be. Just take a look at Vauxhall way . They want to replace the roundabout with traffic lights. More congestion and more pollution. Hatters way. From bury park 1 lane at the roundabout. Causing delays and pollution. Arriva buses churn out stakes of shitty pollution. Chaul end lane. Another pollution hotspot. All due to poor road layout. The council have made stonetgate rd carrisbrook rd all one way. Speed humps all over the place. The town is becoming gridlocked and saturated in pollution. It's a cunning plan by the council to force people from their cars. Their road planning are toxic for the town and a danger to our health and wellbeing.

I think you'll find that the modern buses are far less polluting than the old Routemaster types.
They also have the 'switch-off' when stopped at bus-stops.
                But carry on.

Boris is bringing in Electric Buses, so all will be good in the future, apparently.
