    Long term fan base

Posted by AgentOrange on 12/1/2020, 19:17:17

Looking around the ground yesterday it occurred to me we have quite an aging fan base. I'd say the average age was early 50s. If we are going to fill the new ground we need more young people attending to make it sustainable and I hope the club factor this in. Apologies this isn't vitriolic about the current team or manager.

Absolute nonsense. We started acquiring a much younger crowd during the Conference years and have moved in since then.

The Oak Rd/F& G blocks are full of younger generation fans, kids and grandkids born in this area from parents who were the children of the London overspill to which Luton expanded over in the 60s /70s. The first overspill generation with London ties are now dying out my parents included but my kids are Lutonians and proud of it . The quicker Power Court is up and running with the facilities the young people expect the quicker the club can grow.

Where were you sat? Kenny End? I have never been able to look around 3 sides of the ground from my seat and work out the average age of the crowd from people sat a few hundred metres away.

Lol. As you know I was using a subset (a statistical sample) of individuals from within a statistical population to estimate characteristics of the whole population. Clearly I couldn't profile 10,000 people but enough to draw my conclusion.

I sit in Kenny End and it's full of middle-aged and old people.

But I also know that in other parts of the ground there are lots of much younger people.

Although it is also a fair point, younger people are less likely to have the money to stump up in the summer for a Season Ticket, but if it at Power Court there are more tickets available per game then this is less of an issue.

Hmm, I'd say the walk to and from the ground supports my view too, and that doesn't identify where people sit. Anyway, my point was, we seem to have an aging fan base, let's hope it's not an issue longer term, and secondly, the new ground represents a good chance to do something about it if it's true.

I'm positive 2020 are aware, as they're a sharp bunch. The only thing I applaud the to55ers at MK for is being clever enough to realise they had zero proper fans, so they have given 1000s of tickets away as raffle prizes etc etc etc to local village events schools etc in an effort to build a base from youngsters.... And the strategy has worked to a certain extent.Power Court should give a bit of capacity breathing space to do exactly the same thing (but we obviously won't need to give away as many) and get kids hooked as we all are-COYH

I was thinking of MK after I'd posted that actually. I'm sure they still give away alot of free tickets but I'm not sure their reach is what it was. They used to give alot of free tickets away to LU7 postcodes to try and nab our fans. But, I live in Woburn just south of MK and they have literally no presence here, as exampled by Ben Chilwell playing youth football here but never being scouted by them.

I caught the coach from MK to Luton 1st game for us back in L2 v Wimbledon, 2014.

Was a decent bunch of youths from MK even then travelling to Luton explaining that they preferred the atmosphere at Luton.

MK were a division above us then.

I live in a LU7 village and they have sadly won a few young fans over- Dad's take their kids simply cos it's very cheap to do so and young kids love any football if a big (in their eyes) stadium is involved..
