    He went AWOL at least three times in 1915, captured, fined and returned to his unit. As his unit was still in Blighty he got off lightly. His Royal Artillery unit was sent to France in November 1917. He appears to have been wounded in Italy. Presumably his unit was sent to help Italy after the Battle of Caporetto (a huge Italian defeat).
