    Loft spray insulation

    Posted by Lu5hatter2 on 9/10/2019, 19:54:46

A company phoned claiming to have government funding to check the carbon footprint of homes, to help people get costs down and help the environment, my wife agreed to the check but he only went in the loft and took Images of mould and cracks in roof beams, he said we needed insulation spray to get moisture down, as we could end up paying more council tax, seems like scaremongering to me,has anyone had this done or heard about itís integrity cia

you need ventilation in your loft, modern houses have breathable membrane instead of felt supplying ventilation, spraying foam between the rafters will stop it from being breathable and stop the ventilation. older houses have fascia or soffit vents which provide air flow, spraying foam between the rafters will not stop the airflow.
insulate your loft at the ceiling joists (laying between the joists and over in the opposite direction) with 200mm to 300mm of fibre glass to insulate the house below. you could use PIR (celotex, kingspan between joists) but it is very expensive and a pain in the arse to fit. i'll get me coat

The spray formula used has no flexibility at all ,I am not a builder but think that is not a wise move.

Bloke came round to assess our house last year. Tried to sell me it - plusses are insulation and strengthens dodgy roofs. I said the roof is sound. Also you need air circulating in the attic to prevent mould. When I asked how much, he got evasive then insulting. In the end I said tell me how much or go now. He measured up by pacing the outside of the house and said about £10k - see ya mate.

Spent £100 on top up loft insulation. If you need to store lots in the attic then install battens to lift the boards so insulation can be laid underneath.

My mother in law has had hers done within the last 12 months. A small 4 bed detached house in Aylesbury. Cost her circa £4k.

The bit about paying more council tax sounds absolute rubbish.
              Seems dodgy in the extreme.

When he showed me some sort of Infa red pictures of mould on my roof beams, I pointed out the house has been up since 1935 and I was pleased with the results he showed me (I started trolling him in the end) one of the assets I have inherited from reading the outlaws board over the years

my take on things like this, i never invite people/companies that are selling something that cold call me into my home. If i want some work carried out i always initialise the contact.

My wife insisted she wouldnít be buying anything, it was the line about the government funding they get to save us money and the planet, that she felt no harm in checking, but you are of course correct with that stance

                        Cheers.

Your OP sounds like a bit of a scam, tbh.

I used to keep getting from a company saying there was a government scheme for loft insulation blah blah. I just told them the truth, I haven't got a loft.
