Peter Shilton at fault Turin 1990

    Posted by C on 7/10/2019, 15:09:07

Useless donkey, the ball ballooned off Paul Parker's toe and into the net, Dave Beasant who is a good 4 inches taller would've save it easily.

    Fecking crap.

Will take that pen shootout to my grave, Chris Woods should have been put in for the pens. Bobby Robson mistake for me.

You havenít even mentioned his comical error for Italyís first goal in the 3rd/4th place play-off a few days after this.

Remember it well . Look at his feet he didnít even leave the ground. Like others said great keeper but well past his best at this tournament.

Hadn't Derby just finished 5th in the Prem.

He was still right up there with Woods and Seaman being the only other genuine contenders really. Nigel Martyn was up there too.

Beasant would have saved at least one of the German penalties Iím absolutely sure.

                * David Seaman was originally selected, but after the first game in Italy, he had to pull out of the squad due to a thumb injury and was replaced by Dave Beasant.

Ah fair enough. I wasn't very old at the time so I've no recollection of the tournament whatsoever!

apart from when he played for England straight after and was shit.

Shilton was slow and no where near any of the penalties.
Way past his best by then, Beasant would have done much better in the shoot out.

He did dive right way for all of them.

But stupidly didn't move early for any of them as it was against the rules, even though every other keeper did it.

Beasant would have basically saved one purely by moving early.

Iíve actually heard Lineker talking about this - they were roommates at Italia 90 and Lineker and Shilton had noticed that a high proportion of penalties in the tournament had been put down the middle, and reasoned that if Shilton stayed put until the kick was taken he stood a good chance of keeping a few out.

Of course the Germans hit four penalties all in the corner and that was that.

Never thought Shilton was better than Clemence & should have got to one of those penalties.

Total conjecture. Shilton didnít do himself any favours, but the Germans didnít miss a pen from 1976 to 2014 in shootouts.

Great keeper but well past his best by Italia 90.

Tim Breacker broke him on the final day of the season before Italia 90.

                        Never even saw it.
