    Sluga...some thoughts

Posted by Surrey Hatter on 7/10/2019, 8:46:01

Sorry about this long post. But Iíve been thinking over the weekend...
I understand the emotional reaction of football fans when faced with what clearly were atrocious goalkeeping errors. And how that can impact the team and particularly the defence.
But, clearly, Sluga did not become a poor keeper overnight.
So what has been going on?
A little while ago I worked for a team in a large global company but based in the UK. We Ďimportedí a lot of expensive and senior talent into London and every time we went through a detailed and lengthy process. Not just about cability but looking at aptitude to move counties and cultures. Many were not offered jobs because of concern about their ability to achieve the transition successfully. And on the occasions when it didnít work it was usually down to Ďhomesicknessí.
I wonder how much of that due diligence the football club did. It seems from GJís comments that there were questions in this area early on. It also seemed to be quite a rushed process.
Itís not just football that makes the decisions. If only life was that simple. All sorts of factors come into play.
It may be that the situation could have been very different if Slugaís induction was not so immediate but he spent time in the background getting used to his new environment in all senses of that word.
My view would be that the management must bear a good portion of responsibility. Saturday was no surprise. So, why wasnít he given time out before now?
The poor guy must be feeling absolutely sick and depressed. We have clear humanistic values at Luton Town. And weíre proud of them. Unfortunately, they donít seem to have been much in evidence in this situation.
Like most of us, I want to see Sluga turn things round. Not least because of our investment in him. But perhaps we should have managed and cared for our investment rather better before now if we wanted to achieve a return on it.

We have been making excuses for him long enough - myself included. The bottom line is, he's a liability and needs to be 'rested'.
If Shea isn't good enough as some are predicting, he will have another chance in due course. Or if Shea plays great, he won't but it's win-win.
There's a player in Sluga but we're not in a position to keep chucking points and goals away.

Simple. he young and goalkeepers mature later than other footballers. Been a whirlwind for him and he now needs a break from the limelight to improve various aspects of his games in the background.
Then we will see where we are!

Shea deserved on last seasons performance to be between the sticks from day one!

Good post Surrey Hatter with valid points. It might be that the move was rushed and he can't settle.Obviously he is a decent keeper otherwise he wouldn't be in a strong Croatia squad. Moves don't always work out , and international/cultural transfers are always higher risk than domestic transfers. Like you I hope the Club is supporting him personally; club, player, and fans are all losers here but we should make the best of the circumstances and act compassionately.

One thing I wonder is whether the interest that other clubs were showing for Sluga in the summer (Ironically we beat Derby to his signature) made us rush the decision.

Was reading an article about Kieran Tierney of Arsenal along the same lines, saying that he was missing home. Felt homesick!

He clearly has significant ability. Much more so than Shea. Just strange why he is making so many mistakes. Settling in and nerves initially and now a confidence issue i guess. Hopefully he can come back stronger as he clearly has a lot of potential. Some of the rubbish spouted on here about him is incredible.

Iíd be genuinely interested to know why you believe he has significant ability, apart from coming off his line quickly he doesnít seem really good at much else. As Iíve said previously, to move from a league where the biggest club has an average gate of 8.5k to the Championship Is a huge jump

if you know anything about goalkeeping, you can tell the way that he moves that he has ability. Apparently Callum McManaman described him as the best keeper he has ever played with, albeit before all the blunders.

Just needs time to settle and will come good im sure. Clearly with hindsight, should've been given a few months to settle in to the country first.

Even DeGea was poor first season and came good second season. We just need to persevere. There is a good keeper in there.

So McManaman said he was the best goalkeeper he had ever played with before he actually played a league game with him! As the first mistake was Middlesborough? If we persevere we will be relegated by February, this is big boys football, you don't perform you are out.
