    Thoughts on yesterday

Posted by Jonathan on 6/10/2019, 9:04:05

Shea putting an arm round Sluga at half time. James is a great team man and his time has come.

No excuses for the mistake by Sluga but part of the problem was no outlet or movement in front of Pearson so he had to go back.

Midfield just looked disjointed and lacking cohesion. I don't understand why he is not playing Butterfield in away games like this. Derbyshire were at home but they had their Shinnie in that role. He wasn't that creative but he broke up play and disrupted.

We have gone on about Collins and Hylton together but I think a fully fit and firing Danny would make a difference and take the load off Collins. Let's face it, Curtis had a Saturday afternoon stroll like the good old days. Can Danny get fit though? If not, we have to get someone in January. In the meantime, I would play Lua Lua rather than Cornick - at least the ball might stick.

Izzy Brown looked good when he came on. Do we have too many players who are best as impact subs? I would put McManaman and Cornick in that category.

Frustrating thing is Derbyshire weren't that great and we were two goalkeeping errors and a miss from 3 yards from winning the game. But it is the home form that is key and 1 win from 5 has to be improved.

      Sluga is shocking.

Leaving Butterfield out again and again is shocking.

Playing our best CF in years anywhere except CF is shocking.

Continually trying to play like Man City from the back when you have a keeper with zero confidence and a centre half partnership that's better suited to league 1 football is shocking.

Continually hearing from Jones how much him and the players will have learned from a performance or defeat is tiresome and a load of bollox when the same mistakes happen the following week.

I said in the summer I'd be happy with 21st. From what I've seen of other teams so far theres no reason, if we cut out the mistakes and Jones stopped dicking about with team and gets the basics right, we cant finish quite a few places higher.

Hasn't Jones said that he doesn't believe that Butterfield is up to playing 3 games in seven days at the moment?

Presumably he bases that on watching the games back, watching training and taking input from the coaches and fitness professionals.

Where do you draw your opinion from that he's wrong about that?

I havent heard him say that tbh.

Although if that's the case, I'd question why, with all those backroom staff hes employed, they cant get him up to fitness and/or we havent a player similar to replace him.

Jones was employed from February so he could get a head start on things.

Okay, but these players are human beings. They don't conform to strict engineering guidelines and perform to set capacities.

No manager will know a player that well until he's been through a pre-season with him and hasn't Butterfield had injury issues so his recovery can never be fully predicted.

And it's far too easy to say he should have x, y and z in the squad. Sure we could have signed ten defensive midfielders but would any of them have been of championship quality? With our budget in this division our squad will always be a compromise. We can't have it all.

Apparently we should of signed an experienced, pacy goalscorer with a proven record at this level.

I guess whoever suggested that must’ve been able to find the tree they grow on.

I totally appreciate we cant have it all. Regards our budget, non of us know what that is, what we do know is that 2020 have backed every manager theyve employed to the hilt, so if the manager identifies a position that needs strengthening, I've no doubt the board would do their bit.

Football is a simple game, hence why its enjoyed by people the world round. For me, Jones is making it far too complex and changed too much in a short space of time.

But they can't now can they.

Up until now if the manager said "I need a quality Goalie/Defender/Midfielder/Attacker" we've had the resources to back the manager.

Now, we simply do not. We are competing against teams whose budgets are an order of magnitude higher than ours. 2020 are brilliant but we aren't able to compete on even playing field in this division.

                  "Football is a simple game" . . . maybe . . . 30 years ago.

Very true but we can be organised and make it hard for teams to break us down. I just don't see that at the moment, as BBB says playing it out from the back when you don't have the quality to do this is at best stupid. WBA fans said exactly this and they had better players.

I'm torn between agreeing and disagreeing about him changing too much too soon.

On one side you could argue a successful side just needed tweaking but the counter argument is the loss of Stacey and Justin, two integral parts of the old system.

Perhaps we couldn't find or attract players suitable for the system to compete in the higher league so Jones had to change the system for the players he did sign?

Posted by bbb on 6/10/2019, 13:46:28, in reply to "Re: Thoughts on yesterday"

Understandably he couldnt sign like for like replacements for JJ and Stacey, although I would have hoped for better than he got in those positions given he had from February to scout for players.

Obviously the play with 2 attacking full backs had to change that's no excuse to continually play this football from inside our own box with players not up to it or to play Collins out of position time and time again.

I can only presume that Butterfield is carrying an injury or not fully match fit. There is no logical other motive for not playing the best fit DM at the club in an away game.

                        Decent post.

Definitely agree with your last paragraph.

I completely understand why we sold Stacey and Justin in the summer but it's still a tad frustrating because I think our side last season was much better than our team this year. That side last year would have been comfortably mid table, pushing playoffs IMO.

We've seemingly srangely regressed despite playing in a higher league. Been an odd season so far. I'm not entirely sure what our identity is yet, either.

Is it because the standard in the Championship is higher and our team has not yet adjusted?

Posted by HH on 6/10/2019, 11:33:42, in reply to "Re: Thoughts on yesterday"

                            Maybe.

But Jones doesn't seem to know his best setup and lineup yet either so it may take a while to adjust if it is a case of waiting for adjustment

Home form isn't ‘key’ - winning enough games to stay up (whether home or away) is. So far we’ve looked better away.

                                  Firstly,about yesterday's game,we were at least a
couple of yards slower in the first half than Derby, and Sluga's mistake on the backpass put us at a disadvantage, but we were holding our own up to half-time. In the second period we matched up pace wise and were getting back into contention until another unforced error by Sluga trying to catch a cross from his left side rather than palming it away for a corner cost us the game.
