    The Lisbon Treaty

    That's a laugh init.
    All you remainers must be looking forward to next year when this comes in. Potentially in a few years time some of you could be doing national service on behalf of the 4th Reich.

    Article 45
    1. The European Defence Agency referred to in Article 42(3), subject to the authority
    of the Council, shall have as its task to:
    (a) contribute to identifying the Member States’ military capability objectives and
    evaluating observance of the capability commitments given by the Member States;
    (b) promote harmonisation of operational needs and adoption of effective, compatible
    procurement methods;
    (c) propose multilateral projects to fulfil the objectives in terms of military
    capabilities, ensure coordination of the programmes implemented by the
    Member States and management of specific cooperation programmes;
    (d) support defence technology research, and coordinate and plan joint research
    activities and the study of technical solutions meeting future operational needs;
    (e) contribute to identifying and, if necessary, implementing any useful measure for
    strengthening the industrial and technological base of the defence sector and for
    improving the effectiveness of military expenditure.
    2. The European Defence Agency shall be open to all Member States wishing to be
    part of it. The Council, acting by a qualified majority, shall adopt a decision defining
    the Agency’s statute, seat and operational rules. That decision should take account of
    the level of effective participation in the Agency’s activities. Specific groups shall be
    set up within the Agency bringing together Member States engaged in joint projects.
    The Agency shall carry out its tasks in liaison with the Commission where necessary.

          So basically the eu army is nothing more than an assessment exercise to help countries that are allied together to deliver efficient defence spending.

            Sounds like a European version of NATO.
            Nothing to worry about.

              NATO is basically Europe plus the US anyway.As for scraemongering about national service...pesumably if there ever was a war that needed a force large enough that people were conscripted ...then being in or out of the EU woudl make no difference. Project fear from leavers. Except the project fear from remainers is probably more accurate and more chance of happening.

                  Contributes the majority of it. But they also have the biggest influence you`d say

                  As Trump has said at the beginning of his presidency (but probably forgotten about now) he didn't want to keep paying for NATO, there might be a possibility that it would be disbanded, so having a replacement co-operative defence force would make sense.

                    does he actually make a financial contribution? or just donate troops from the armed forces they have anyway? and would still have? He doesnt seem like the type to cut defence spending

                      He was on record saying that the USA makes the biggest contribution and he didn't see why it should continue to do so.
                      But that was a while ago, so it might have slipped his mind.

                            So which current member of the EU has the largest standing military and would basically make up most of this EU army? Over which it would have no control.

                            It's why the ex military guys I know voted the way they did.

                                It forms the European project of integration and cooperation. If you honestly think that we will stand outside of this then you are misguided.
                                It will be an umbrella for the whole of the EU of which by the looks if it we cant leave because of all the bedwetting.
                                It is inconceivable that a EU military will not include GB as part of the set up.
                                For the first time in a thousand years we potentially could have foreign troops on these shores.
                                As for scaremongering on Nat Service some parts of Europe have it and it is often discussed here, however, at least we can vote out any government who would try to introduce it.
                                As punishment for surrendering our birthright to the fascists I hope you remainers embrace the Lisbon Treaty which by the way from one nation voting against policies it dont like and therefore stopping it for the rest to "qualified majority voting. Into the near future if they so decide it's a great idea to get the youth into national service then the majority will decide not every single nation as at present.
                                Be careful what you wish for.
