Say what you like about the Man City situation - their owners invested in the business and the infrastructure around that. How many other industries punish owners for pumping investment into their company?

With ordinary companies, owners don't pump in cash just to cover losses with no hope of ever getting a return on that investment. That business is not viable if it relies on that

Calling that an 'investment' is a complete misnomer. Investment implies that a financial return will be made. In most circumstances, in football the investments are made for other reasons. Some good, some bad - financing a community asset, individual (or group) status, pure ego, genuine goodwill, influence and power, sports washing, etc, etc

Also, the financial rules are there to protect clubs. Protecting them from being overly burdened by an owner or ownership group, who then get bored and fuck off, leaving the club completely unattractive to any potential new buyer and, therefore, leaving the club in crisis and chaos. Luton have been through a version of that. Derby, Sheff Wed and Portsmouth are other examples
