Some excellent wins on this day, including the 2-0 victory at Everton in 1988, but perhaps the best story is Tony Read's goal at Rochdale. It was the fourth time Read had been used as a striker but his first goal, and would start a run of 12 goals in 24 games, including a hat-trick against Notts County. Old habits died hard though, and he was booked early on at Spotland for punching the ball.

The 8-1 win against Darwen in September 1898 is one of 10 occasions Luton have scored more than seven goals in a Football League game. The most recent of these was the 8-2 win against Yeovil in 2017.

Happy Birthday to Littlewoods Cup winning captain Steve Foster, who is 69 today. Also a thought for Alan Slough on what would have been his 79th birthday.
