I don't think it's a good idea to clean up the terminls I think it's something you HAVE to do!!
And clean the inside of the wire clamps as well!!

By the looks of the battery and all the crude on the terminals/clamps your battery unfortunately may very well be on it's last days.

If you get it charged up and starting the car now you'll probably find the battery gives up the ghost (not the holy one🙃

when the winter arrives and you'll driving around with lights and heater on. etc
