Hatters Heritage - On this day

    Born today: https://hattersheritage.co.uk/players?born-today=yes&sort=date-active

4 players have been born today.

The first was Walter Miller in 1868, who played 3 FA Cup games for us in seasons 1889/90 & 90/91. I was interested to note in the match report for the last game he played for the Town that the 93rd Highland Regiment (in what was the only season that they competed in the FA Cup) “elected to visit Luton, where there was a better chance of gaining a good “gate”, a consideration that is becoming more and more important to football clubs throughout the country”.

Whether a crowd of 1500 achieved their desired outcome I wouldn’t know but the report goes on to state that “The alterations which are at present taking place in the Town Club’s field precluded the possibility of the match taking place there, and it was accordingly played in a field attached to the Bury Park Farm”. This switch certainly made no difference to the “strangers”, however, who went on to win the game 7-0, although perhaps this score line shouldn’t be surprising since in the previous 5 years they had been in existence had only been defeated 3 times. The report also says that in one of those seasons they scored 127 goals and only conceded 4 !!!

The next player to be born was Doug Rowe in 1909, who played 25 games for the Hatters, scoring 8 goals, between April 1932 and May 1933. He is probable unique in being the only player ever to represent the club who was this Country’s Amateur Welterweight Wrestling Champion.

The third player is Connor Essam, who was born in 1992, and played 9 times for the Town in season 2012/13.

The last player is Danny Green, who was born in 1988, and played 30 games in season 2015/16, scoring 6 goals.
