I suspect it was a warning shot to a yachttie, who was not monitoring his radio and got a bit too close for their comfort.

It is not unusual for some of these sailors to put on the autopilot and just drift off to sleep when south of the IoW. I've seen it on a couple of occasions and it is really dangerous.

The container ships cannot change course and would not even notice if you were run down.
