Can’t read the whole article. If it is saying she was given special treatment then that is for HMRC to answer as they determined the case. The penalty regime may be complex, it could be improved but I’d still argue that if it’s deliberately treating people differently based on similar situations that is illegal. It needs to be challenged. I’ve not seen any actual evidence of that apart from people saying that’s what they think. What is clear is HMRC does not and never has said it treats everyone the same but based on equality of outcome. This was a high profile case decided on its merits unless proved otherwise and not based on opinion.
