Hatters Heritage - On this day

60 years today we won 2-0 in a Fiurth Division match ( now League Two) at home to Stockport County, with goals from Bruce Rioch and Ray Whittaker. However, it was to be another 50 years before we won another game on this day, which was a 4-1 win at home to Exeter City in League Two and this was followed by a 1-0 home win against Reading in 2022 in the Championship. Our record in the last 60 years therefore reads played 10; won 2; drawn 3 and lost 5.

3 players have been born on this day. The first was Bill Ford in 1876, this was followed by Bill Coote in 1909 and lastly Micky Droy in 1951.

5 players have made their debut on this day, with the first being Jim McNicholl in 1977. He is perhaps, however, most famously known amongst football supporters as having been bitten by a police dog, playing for Torquay Utd, on the last day of the season 10 years later. As a result of his injury the match against Crewe Alexandra went in to injury time and in that time Torquay score an equaliser which saved them from relegation and kept them in the Football League.

The next player to make his debut on this day was Wayne Turner 47 years ago in 1979 away at Wrexham. Unbeknown to me when I took my seat in the stand for that match I was sitting next to his Mum and Dad. We got chatting and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it was clear how proud both of them were to see him make his debut for his home town club. Some years later I told this story to Wayne when I met him again during a visit to his house whilst carrying out my own professional duties and since that time we have remained good friends

The third player to make his debut on this day was Julian James in 1988. This was followed by both Tyreeq Bakinson and Julian James who both came on as substitutes 10 years ago in the home game against Exeter City in 2016
