36 years ago today the Hatters achieve their most unlikely escape from relegation with a 3-2 win away at Derby County. On a very warm day approximately 5000 Hatters fans crammed on to the terrace and in the stand behind the goal which was to be the end where the winning goal was scored. The Town made a perfect start with a goal after only 66 seconds, with a stunner of a free kick from Tim Breaker. 17 minutes later we were in “dreamland” as Kingsley Black put us 2-0 up. However, 11 minutes later Derby were to get a goal back and in injury time of the first half County were to equalise. A tense second half then ensued until Kingsley scored his second goal on 74 minutes. This result, together with the news that Forest were beating Sheff Wed would mean that we would avoid the drop. A dramatic last few minutes then took place but the team dug deep to protect the lead and record only their second away win of the season. At the final whistle the scenes of jubilation were equal, and arguably greater (given we had to win 3 games in succession to stay up that season) to the celebrations of any Cup Final, Play off, promotion or relegation match I have attended.
15 years ago we all but sealed our spot in our second Conference Play off Final with a 3-0 win away in the first leg of the semi final match at Wrexham.
8 years ago we went to Notts County and nearly 4500 fans created a party atmosphere throughout the game in celebration of promotion from League Two. At the end of the match, which ended 0-0, the rendition of “Woke up this morning feeling fine/Something tells me I’m in to something good” for 5/10 minutes after the final whistle (by, it seemed everyone in the stand) gave an atmosphere at the end of the game which united both the team, management and fans in a way which was unequalled in all my time of supporting the Hatters. If I ever want to be reminded of how great the connection between us fans and our club can be then I watch the video of that moment and am always uplifted by it.
2 players have been born today. The first was George Turner in 1910 and the other was Amari’i Bell in 1994.
2 players have also made their debut on this day. The first was Cyril Bonsall in 1923, on what was also our first League match to be played on this day. The other player was Sam Bell 11 years later in 1934.
