20 years ago today we played Reading at home in a match where they were on an unbeaten run of 33 games, since their first game of that season. Reading opened the score after just 20 seconds, but 2 goals from Rowan Vine and another from Dean Morgan gave us a 3-1 lead. A last minute goal from them made us sweat for the last few seconds, before we ran out 3-2 winners.
4 players have been born on this day, with the first being Brian Whitby in 1939. This was followed by John Seasman in 1955 and Jason Walker in 1984. The final player to be born on this day was to arrive on the same day as the Reading match above. Happy 20th birthday Joe Johnson.
5 players have made their debut on this day, although 4 of them were more than 100 years ago. The first player to do so was Jack Durrant in 1898 and subsequent to this Arthur Eling made his debut in 1903, this was followed by Jack Bradshaw in 1920 and Billy Thirlaway in 1925. The last player to make his debut for us, however, was only 11 years ago and was Olly Lee in 2015. For me and probably most Luton fans he will best be recalled for a magnificent volley he scored in our 7-0 home win against Cambridge Utd in Nov 2017. Unfortunately, however, the goal he scored on that day (which arguably required a greater technical ability and resulted in a more difficult execution, due to the need to watch the ball closely as it dropped over his shoulder) was somewhat overshadowed by the goal which his brother Elliott scored from his own half in that game !!
