Trouble is, we make it even more difficult than it should be. In the summer of 2024, we thought we could rip up the identity and style that got us to a really strong position (no Billy Big Bollocks indeed) and, subsequently, every manager since has tried to get us playing differently. Edwards, Bloomfield and Wilshere. 3 or 4 playing style changes in less than 2 years
If the club had a defined playing strategy, identity and style and stuck to it, then recruiting managers would be a safer bet. This is where a DoF can help. And any change in style should be incremental and gradual rather than dramatic
That's one of the reasons we keep failing in managerial recruitment. New managers always want to come in and rip it up. Apart from Edwards who changed very little and got promoted and Harford in 2019 when he changed nothing and, er, got promoted. Lesson to be learned there, perhaps
