That there is only a finite number of centre-forwards to actually find. That those of whom who would fit into the desired formation and style of play and also genuinely improve us is a smaller number. That those of this smaller number who actually would want and be able to join us, at all, is yet a smaller number, let alone in January.

Then add in the fact that anyone who actually fits that bill is probably quite attractive to a number of other clubs who themselves might be a more attractive proposition than us to this pool of players.

Maybe Yates and Wells were the absolute best we could do at a time when our number one target was a bloke who was only supposed to be out for a few weeks before firing us to the top of the league.

It does feel a bit odd that I'm having to explain this to someone who's been around long enough that I shouldn't. You go ahead and hold your breath or scream and scream and scream until we sign 'a centre forward', though, if you imagine that this makes you somehow superior as a supporter. I'll go ahead and lose no sleep over what you choose to tell yourself.
