Auschwitz is a must (although inevitably a pretty shocking experience).
Do try to spend some time in the old Jewish area, Kasimiersz. It still has several synagogues, Jewish schools and some wonderful
Jewish restaurants. If you're lucky, you may find one with a live klezmer band to accompany your meal.
While you are in/near Kasimiersz, try to fit in a visit (three or four hours if possible) to the former Schindler factory. It was set up
as a museum with funding from Steven Spielberg (and others), and gives an amazingly clear impression of what went on in Poland
just before and during the war. You will probably also come away with a firm understanding of just what a rogue Schindler himself was:
yes, he did some good things, but a large part of his interest in his workers was to ensure his personal profit
(and also so that he could shag any likely young ladies he employed).
