Immigration numbers rocketed after Brexit and that consists mostly of people from places outside Europe. That's where the massive jump occurred

Net migration was around 250,000 in 2019 and jumped to 800,000 in 2023.

A lot of immigration is, I believe, temporary student immigration. But I could be wrong on that and I can't be bothered to check

Asylum figures were pretty low from around 2005 until 2019 and an awful lot of applications were rejected in that time too

Net migration was negative in the 60s and 70s but that's because of emigration more than balancing it out. The numbers coming in were basically steady from 1964 to the mid-80s (just below 250,000). Then it started to climb slowly basically cancelling each other out until the turn of the century when it then accelerated for 2 decades with a couple of blips in that trend. Then came the huge leap from 2019 and that really started to move post-Covid
