I have looked at all the relegations from the championship to league one since 2005 and then compared those to the promotions from league one to the championship the following season and there are some interesting statistics.
Since 2005, 60 teams have been relegated and 18 of them have not yet made it back to the championship.
it takes a team 4.25 seasons to get promoted back to the championship. If we ignore those 18 teams they haven’t made it then it takes 3.25 seasons on average to get back to the championship.
Of the 60 teams which have been relegated since 2005 there have been 16 (26%) instances of a team getting promoted directly back to the championship at the first attempt. Of these 15 teams I would classify five of them as being big clubs, Leicester, Birmingham, Norwich, Wolves, and Bolton.
Notably, there are some other big clubs who have taken more than one year to get promoted, Forest, Leeds, Southampton, both Sheffield clubs Portsmouth, Derby and Ipswich. All of these clubs took more than one year some just took two but Portsmouth took 12.
Off the 16 teams which bounced back at the first time of asking five of these, come from Wigan and Rotherham each being promoted at the first attempt on a few occasions.
Finally there has been one instance when all three clubs got promoted back to the championship at the first attempt that was in Wigan, Blackburn and Rotherham in 2017.
So this doesn’t bode well for Luton, Cardiff and Plymouth fans and considering the statistic and two of them have new managers then Luton may seem more equipped to go straight back up.
Let’s hope we increase than 16% this season. CoyH.
