Personally if it’s small I would tend to leave it in a container/pot and maybe plant out next year,although clematis can be planted out anytime of the year really.
This way you can move it around the garden until established enough to plant out.
Remember to cover the roots with a mulch as they like their feet in the shade and head in the sun,plus keep the soil moist but don’t overwater.
