Cup Final hero https://hattersheritage.co.uk/players/ken-hawkes-p643 John Warner https://hattersheritage.co.uk/players/john-warner-p655 Debut Stanley Coote https://hattersheritage.co.uk/players/stanley-coote-p479 Sam Mayberry https://hattersheritage.co.uk/players/sam-mayberry-p547 Four Luton Town players are on the World War 2 Roll of Honour. However, we must not forget Samuel Mayberry the fifth LTFC player to die in the war. He did not join the Armed Forces which may explain why he is not on the Roll of Honour. In addition, he played for his local club, Scunthorpe United then Doncaster Rovers during the war years. Sam was born in 1918 in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. His family moved to Scunthorpe and he played for Gainsborough Trinity as a goalkeeper. LTFC signed him in 1938 as cover for Joe Coen. Six foot tall he was a commanding figure and a great prospect. Sam made his debut in the last game of the 1938/39 season at home to Coventry. We lost 3 1 but as one newspaper put it "Luton are confident that Sam Mayberry, their reserve keeper, will hit the high spots next season'. Sadly Sam never got the chance to prove himself. When war broke out Sam returned to Scunthorpe to work as a moulder in a steel works. Presumably as a skilled essential worker he was invaluable to the war effort so did not join the Armed Forces. Sam died on the 19th October 1941. Censorship meant that newspaper reports merely said Sam had "been in hospital some days, but his death occurred suddenly." There is also mention of an accident and it appears that there was an explosion in the factory where he worked. Sam was buried on the same day as our first team goalkeeper, Joe Coen. Sam rests at Crosby Cemetery, Scunthorpe. Rest in peace Sam. ![]() |
