1) Edwards did brilliantly to get us up. We’ll never know if Jones would have got us promoted that season, but it looked unlikely at the time.
Edwards also excelled for the middle part of last season. After a tough start, he progressed the tactics so that we played football that was both entertaining and effective enough to finish above Burnley and Sheffield United.
2) Edwards has coped badly since the start of the year. We had the “five cup finals” in our last five games to stay up, and only managed one draw. We’re now only out of the relegation spots on goals scored.
Edwards now appears to lack any plan B. We lack discipline and cohesion. Having kept so many of our best players - Kaminski, Doughty, Mengi, Adebayo, Morris, Chong, Bell - we should be at least mid-table, not 21st.
He clearly wants to leave. Saying “I don’t want to be divisive,” when he knows he will be after yesterday, shows Edwards has had enough. Assuming that happens, he deserves respect for what he achieved, but it’s also time.
3) Sweet and 2020 have been the best board the club has ever had. Not only did they save the club, they got us into the Premier League just a decade after we were non-League.
They’re also finally getting a new stadium sorted. The club have tried to move out of KR since before any of us were born. 2020 will achieve it. That seems on track for 2027-28. One of the few things everyone has agreed on this season is how good those stadium plans look.
Given all that, if you’re making comments wrt Sweet about backhanders, his waistline and/or his background in sales, you’re a tit.
4) The past two transfer windows have been shambolic, as is the club’s communication. 2020 are largely to blame for both. Sweet’s insistence on micromanaging the transfer budget has backfired. We had a good eye for a bargain throughout our rise from the National League, but we’d always buy players. That continued with the Premier League season: Kaminski, Mengi.
Why this last window was so poor should have been addressed in the club programme. Instead, stating promotion was the aim when that wasn’t remotely realistic in that window was a pressure that just didn’t need to happen.
