Firstly, what qualifies the majority of people to understand the implications of the things they want in terms of government policy and decision making?
Secondly, the First Past The Post system isn't particularly a democratic way and certainly won't give you a government that the majority of people want.
Thirdly, that FPTP system was voted on about 10 years ago to give the electorate a chance to implement a fairer way of electing MPs. Of those who bothered to vote the majority decided to keep things as they are.
As such, the majority of people in this country don't really want genuine democracy at all or they would have voted for it. Or, as in point 1, they aren't informed well enough about the consequences of what they were voting for.
