Paying Rwanda millions in order to swap a couple of thousand boat people for the equivalent number of those deemed too undesirable to be allowed to stay in Rwanda.

Not a "smart idea", it's paying to not reduce the net amount of migration as well as, logically, getting the shitty end of an exchange.

The possibility of being sent to Rwanda as opposed to the possibility of drowning in the channel as a deterrent.

Spending billions trying to push through a shit idea that will not act as a deterrent nor result in a net reduction in immigration.

Not a "smart idea". Incompetence and profligacy that really ought to be criminal, especially as all it was ever intended to do was placate dickheads.

They spent billions of YOUR money on making you feel like they were doing something but very much actually doing fuck all and you still champion it like it was ever a genuine policy, let alone solution. An actual "smart idea" in as much as any scam or con is but they only really needed the low-hanging fruit.
