It’s the system not the players

Watching Monday reminded me of the 5-1 v Brentford in April. Goals from quick balls in behind and also from direct runs through the middle.

Since December we have played Roball and had nine months of defending high behind a press which teams just negate by a quick and long ball forward.

Conversely when attacking we take our time and enable the opposition to get ten men behind the ball. Monday a case in point when even second half we were having to go sideways and back as no way through.

If you look back to when Edwards first came in, he built
On Jones system. We actually played very similar to Burnley on Monday. Physical, deeper lying defence, win the ball back, get it forward quickly.

We are going to have to adapt in the Championship. Too many teams who will sit back, deny us space and then hit us on the break with a ball behind our high line and pressing defence.

Don’t see how any new players can change any of that.
