Yes, that's basically the theory behind parachute payments. The criticism is that they are too high and more like trampoline payments, allowing relegated clubs to retain their PL quality players and having too much of an advantage.

Quite right that most of the squad had new contracts and wages won't have dropped as low as they would have previously been in the Championship. We lost something like £7m three seasons ago in our last non-promotion Championship season, so need to cover that plus the additional wages which will be substantial.

That said, I expect there are funds available, but we haven't completed many deals yet probably for some of the reasons you suggest. Defence is a concern particularly due to injuries, but the window isn't closed and we haven't done any loan deals yet.

Financial fair play isn't a concern for us. It is only really relevant for clubs with rich owners who want to and can afford to throw their money (or borrowed money) at the club each year.
