From what we know, Venables was remorseful during the trial and sentencing. Incidentally far more so than Thompson.
I wonder if that trial happened today that it would have questioned Venables' ability to make sound choices under the friendship of Thompson. From what we know after sentencing it is evident that Venables hasn't been able to make sound decisions.

I wouldn't want to be the person who determines who gets forgiveness or not. That's reserved for a higher power given that all of us do things that require forgiveness.
