What is very interesting, and hardly mentioned, is the takeover of City by the Abu Dhabi group in 2008 from Thai businessman Thaksin Shinawatra for a reported £200m. The former Prime Minister was in the same year sentenced to two years' imprisonment in absentia over a corrupt land deal. Just a year earlier he had paid £81.6m. One could ask ‘where did the original money come from’ and who gained the proceeds of the sale?
The ground story is interesting too with Maine Road full of bad memories (1983 beaten by Luton Town and relegated). What was the City of Manchester Stadium was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and is now on a 200 year lease from Manchester City Council. With redevelopment currently it has a capacity of 55,000.
