Dont think its anything to do with expectations being higher. Atmoshpere in the Uk has been dying for seasons due to many rules for the fans. I should think most of the people that created the atmospere at football have been kicked out by now.
Look at the atmosphere in Germany , Spain and Italy. If we tried of the things they do to get an atmosphere going we would have a season long ban.

When clubs do over here like Palace and even Arsenal now, they are mocked by other fans calling them embarrassing then moaning there is no atmosphere in their own ground. Plus we dont have an anthem or a decent song the whole ground can sing. Most of are songs are nicked of other clubs and the ones that arent contain alot of swearing which alot of families wouldnt be happy to sing with their young children.
