I don't think it's necessarily quite so simple as that, there are other factors as well as the team selection. So it's possible to select the right team, but for the ref to incorrectly give a penalty against us and then compound that error by sending our player off, in which case we could lose that game but the team selection was not at fault. (Just one example, there are others - an unfortunate/unforeseeable injury, a bad offside decision against us, the opposition simply being better than us if it was a cup game against a top Premier League side, etc...)
