Litherland & Ford - Canal Winding Holes

The winding hole on the Field Lane canal was mentioned in a post by Peter further down the board.

There are two winding holes on the Litherland & Ford stretch of the canal, used for turning the barge.

The canal images date from 2008.

Wish there had been one on the canal we had a holiday on,first my 8 year old son fell off the boat into the water,his dad had to jump in,didnt know at the time the water level was quite low owing to a hot summer,i didnt know how to steer the boat so had to open all the locks not happy when iwould open a lock, mac would go through people behind would follow,and laeve me to close it as i had oppened it they should have closed it

Thanks Peter, I'd made a guess at a place for three point turns, when I saw the pics, but wasn't sure!

It’s a place where the canal has been widened enough to allow a barge to turn around.

That’s really interesting Ronnie, thanks. The canal was a big part of kids lives in those days - regularly falling in and being rescued by older brothers. After WW2 my dads brother Joe kept pigs on the canal bank. There was mayhem one day when some pigs got in the water. Apparently they are in danger of cutting their own throats with their trotters when they swim.

I fell into the cut when I was 7; luckily, an older lad with us pulled me out. Otherwise, I would not have made it!

I remember the pigS quite near cookson pub,and then ia man riding a bike who was thought to have fallenn in the canal was empyied BUT THAN GOODNESS NO BODY WAS FOUND
Mum had a tin with a lid she would wash and clean any veg and the man who had pigs would collect it to feed the pigs

We had a barge holiday year ago should a barge like a car have a reverse,we went stright ahead when we should have turned left got stuck
