My Maternal Grandmother

My maternal grandmother, Bessie Murray, and my mum's eldest sister, Dorcas.

Sadly, Dorcas died in 1917, aged 3, from meningitis.

Bessie was born in Bootle, and Dorcas was born in Litherland.

Before her marriage, Bessie worked in a chippy on Linacre Road and at Williamson's Toffee Works in Bootle.

When Dorcas died, Grandfather Murray was recovering from wounds, having been wounded at the Battle of Messines, 7-14 June, 1917

I had a photo of my Dads mother holding my uncle a baby standing next to her was my Dad 2 years old still wearing a little dress,
PS when my Mum moved to live near my brother she lost all the family photos,

Lovely pic Ronnie. Poor little Dorcas. Although sadly,infant mortality was high.
I like the name Dorcas. It reminds me of a book! I thought Dickens but can't find any reference to it. It's driving me nuts trying to remember where I know it from.

As you say, mortality rates were very high

My mother's younger brother died at 16; he was an apprentice shipwright at Cammell Lairds.

I have the mortality rates for Litherland for 1914-1918 - I will look them out.

My gran who was born in Hereford on the border wit h wales before she married she was a ladies maid,married my grandfather who looked after the horses the family owed,My gran was lovely lady but it was said grandfather was very bad tempered,they had 6 children3 boys and 3 girls,
ps he died9 months before i was born,

sadly many young children died my mums mother had a little boy who died never spoken about other than little Johnnie ,

wish i had taken my camera with me when workin ,wastold soom tales, when all the schoolchildren were taken to barry with a piece of fruit cake and a jam sandwich,one lady told me when they went to see the prince of wales,shexpected a tall handsome man,she was very disapointed i have a coin the school children were given,given to me by a lady I looked after,
