The Home Guard March Past - Sefton Road 1945

This image (2008) is from my old website, it was sent to me by the late John Mercer an ex-Liverpool Fire Bobby. John grew up in Hatton Hill.

The man leading the parade is his Grandfather George Mercer.

Litherland didn't have it's own HG Battalion, Litherland men joined the 75th its HG was on Crosby Road.

Bootle had two HG Bns, 77th & 88th
The HG was active from 14 May 1940 until stood down on 3rd December 1944. It was disbanded December, 1945.

Can see the tower of EM church,what church in the north has a tower and a steeply

I was in the same class at EM school as John strange things you remember his Mum used to knit his school jumper,last I met him he was walking across the Wabbs with a Baby in a pram going to his Mums in Hatton hill,I was with a friend meeting up with more for a day out,
He had a sister think she was in my brother class at school,

He was a paper-boy and delivered around your area of Sefton Road.

He used to feed the horses in the field by you with wind fall apples on his paper round.

I kept in contact with him until his death, he lived off Aitree road, I think it was Fernhill.

He did e mail me a photo of his wife I think she died before him,she went to EM school she would have been a Year younger,

My dad never had a evening paper, during the week,I hd to go down and get him a football paper on a saturday night on my bike,
