years ago I could buy blocks of peat,have a large black bucket, add water and you had a great compost for cutting etc, seeds needed fine compost,but it would be too heavy for me to carry now,so buy 2 bags of compost,think this will be that last year of growing Tomato's i say that every year,

Ronnie. When you had two peat banks did you have to pay for them? I have seen many people cutting the peats and stacking it on the Outer Hebrides and in the Highlands. So, wondered if there was any cost. Hard work by the look of it.

Yes, I paid a yearly rent to the estates they were on, John - It was only £10 per year.

The Factor of the estates took me out to the peat banks and showed me where my bank was and paced off the distance.

A native Ileach I worked with came out with me a number of times and showed me the process of turfing, cutting, forking and stacking into windows to dry before bringing them home by tractor and trailer.

We tried to get coal delivered here after we moved in,Only way was to buy a load think it was about 17 pounds which was a lot in 1969,ended up getting a gas fire, now in 2025 gas fire are outlawed in cardiff council houses,they put in gas central heating,some neighbour have wood burning stoves believe they will be stopped using them,
