Bootle May Queen 1911

Violet was aged 11 in this photo, she lived at 37 Middlesex Road, Bootle.

Violet attended Hawthorne Road Council School.

My maternal grandfather was a pupil at the same school.

There would have been a May Queen committee who raised funds from events, street collections and donations to cover the cost of costumes and decorations plus many volunteers in organising the event each year.

Bootle Council would have given funds as it was a major event in the town calendar attended by the Mayor of Bootle in a May Queen parade around Bootle.

The parade also took in Litherland and Seaforth along Linacre Road, Bridge Road, Seaforth Road back into to Bootle ending at the North Park for the crowning ceremony.

The horses,dougie Fairfield horse was always the best dressed horse in the contest,well for us kids,Inspector Watson had a horse in the field a mare Dougie horse was a stalion got free one night,when dougie was trying to stable him,came racing up the road with dougie running after him to visit her,
