A few houses in Litherland still had pail closets and middens up to the 1920s, these would been emptied by 'night soil' men from the council.
In Victorian times Liverpool's night soil was transported in barges and off loaded in dumping areas past Cookson's Bridge, it was used as fertilzer.
I remember my mate's dad saying never to eat Egyptian spuds as they put their s#@* on them He was out in Eqypt during WWII.
