My maternal grandfather's family of 3 generations all derived their living from the Mersey - Shipwrights, dockers, and seamen.
A great-uncle and uncle were shipwrights, my grandfather had to give up his shipwright apprenticeship when his father died to support the family him being the eldest, he went to work on the docks.
He was invalided out of the army in December 1917 with wounds. He went to sea from 1918 until 1924 and then returned to the docks.
