When I was last down in June/July 2018, the weather was scorching - I would sit on a bench outside of Tescos looking onto the cut and have a takeaway lunch from Tescos - A very tranquil setting.
I was staying at Kent's Hotel on Linacre Road, which I believe now is being used for another purpose.
Is the Red Lion open?
