I remember the bacon slicer in Mary Warings shop in School Lane. I was scared of it!
Can recall however many ounces you asked for (or a quarter)- the question would be 'under or over?' With the next slice hovering over the scale in case you said 'over'!
In addition to the scary bacon slicer, was the vicious cheese wire!!!!
Everything neatly parcelled in greaseproof paper!
Total aside - when my auntie lived in Cheltenham in her youth, due to illness, she was very short of cash. She would buy her meagre rations in a local shop. She noticed that the lady sliced the ends off the cheese before she cut whatever you asked for. Auntie asked the lady what she did with the ends- turns out they were just thrown away. So auntie always being hungry asked if she could have the ends! The lady then started keeping the ends for her - she must have been a kind, kind soul - because the ends started getting bigger each time - so auntie had a decent bit of cheese!!!
