A rare un-used postcard from my collection.
Note the rear end of a horse in the entrance to Tom Holme's smithy.
Note also the 2 enamel advertisements on Domville's shop and the blacksmiths.
James Domville was a WWI veteran and served on the council.
I would go with my older brother to Domville's shop on a Saturday morning for grocery items.
The sugar would be weighed and put in blue bags. They also patted the butter, which fascinated me to watch.
The thing that most sticks in my mind was the smell of ground coffee in a grinder - I had no idea what the coffee grinder was or the brown beans in a glass jar attached to it - We bought coffee for our great-aunt who lived next door to us.
When you entered the shop there was a huge hand-operated bacon slicer on the counter facing the door - I can still hear the sound of the slicer when it was being operated, and the bacon falling into the waiting hand.
My other brother was a Saturday order boy at Domvilles.
