Kate that was way back in 1979,it did get better for the carers (home Helps)
Over the years I did get 3 hours once a week for some, Then came the cuts and more about personal care, helping with a bath or shower dressing and making a meal, All housework stopped,I did make sure their kitchens and bathrooms were safe, in my own time,
I was sent to one couple to help them have abath and dress, The husband first, then the wife, I went into the kitchen and looked out the window, the husband was digging in the back garden,at the day centre , people were saying you get extra money if they said they needed help with having a bath and dressing,
People on Income support had the help free, but it turned out they were better off than people with a small private pension,so they all had to pay,=
When I gave up the job 1999 the pay was £5 an hour plus bus fare between jobs,
