I just got $16,000 from the fed govt, and I don't feel even a tinge of guilt

Granted, I'll have to pay taxes on it but that's ok. Here's how I did it:
So a few months ago, I started researching what was in the CARES Act. And it turns out, they were giving out unemployment AND additional $600 per week if you were a "gig" worker, meaning Uber/Lyft, etc and was now unemployed due to COVID. Now all you had to do was show your 2020 tax documents that show you did in fact work for Uber (which I had both Uber and Lyft 1099s tax summaries). And I had to provide my ID.
So I filed for PUA in July (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance) thinking the worst that could happen is they just deny it. And it immediately was flagged with an issue called "benefit control". I looked this up and this is the unemployment fraud dept. Lot of independent contractors that filed for PUA were getting heavy scrutiny and their claims were being flagged. Now, I was not lying. I was not attempting to defraud the govt, but rather take advantage of their idiotic free money policies. I did in fact work for Uber/Lyft in 2019, and based on the CARES Act I thought I had a good claim to the money since Uber demand is way down due to Covid especially in Florida (even though I haven't driven Uber since last year).
So it took 2 months, but I looked at my online bank account a few days ago and boom there was 16,000 in there. So they just gave me a lump sum of backdated weekly claims. All for essentially being a part time uber driver in 2019, and the pandemic.
absolutely. grab what you can. but these programs were/are poison to the economy*

I'd rather you get it Plaza then many others...plus a question
Are you in Florida? If so, what are you favorite cities in terms of where to live? I am getting out of Seattle in 2024 and looking for the right place. Thanks!

i agree..this is simply fed money printing..its the reason the stock market is high
Lot of people got this money long time ago, and they had nothing to do with it other than put in the stock market. Inflation will kick in at some point.
But I just think it's absurd the fed govt was giving out a flat $600 per week to basically every citizen that even had a part time job that they no longer worked at. I can see now why lot of waitresses would not come back to work given that PUA was paying more than their job.
It feels like qualifying for a Federal Grant, a grant that I don't deserve, that very few people actually need. For the first time, I now know what it's like to be an educator dependent on the federal govt research grants.

Congrats. The system is so effed, and I’m sure that 16k is a mere fraction
Technically I live in Estero, but they run together. I've only lived here for little over a year so I'm def not an expert of all things Florida (i moved out of Champaign in July 2019), but I like it so far. Anything in SW Florida is going to be relatively affordable, safe, and quiet because there are lot of older people here. Airport is great. When i'd come back to the midwest I'd be flying direct Ft Myers to Indy on Spirit for $75 round trip it was perfect. Whether it's Ft Myers, Bonita Beach, Estero, Cape Coral. If you want to live near the beach, where it's fairly quiet (we don't get any spring break crowd), then this is a great spot. And if you want nightlife/culture/etc Miami is not that far away only few hours. I like SW Florida because I feel like it's the quietest safest cheapest place to live, but I'm also very close to other cities to have fun in. And you have the Everglades that are close if you like outdoor stuff, tons of lakes to fish in. Both the Red Sox and Twins have their spring training complexes here. You can visit these giant orange groves in Immokalee which is more inland from where I live. There's huge Indian casino over there too. Coconut trees everywhere. When you're this far south (which I'm more south than even the southern most part of TX, if I go to the beach and look directly west it's Mexico), it's going to be very hot from March thru October. There's going to be pop up showers everyday. Then in the winter time it's very dry. It never rains. Just sun, 70-75 all winter long. I think we went like 58 days in a row from Jan thru Feb without rain. Stuff I didn't know till I got here is that you see alligators everywhere. You'll see them in these ditch/canals right by the roads. But they don't usually bother anyone. The only thing I don't like is sometimes the beach/ocean smells pretty bad. I think it depends on ocean currents and the wind, because you have days when the water is perfect, and other days when it stinks. You're not going to get that crytal clear water here, that is more in the keys. And once you're this far down here, you basically want to fly anywhere if you have to travel. It's tiring driving out of Florida. You wouldn't want to do it. So that could be a drawback, feeling stuck. It's not like the midwest or west where you can drive around. In Florida, you do feel somewhat stuck if you in the far southern tip.
If I had to pick anywhere to retire too, I'd probably pick Auburn. I drove thru it on my way down to Ft Myers and just loved it. Small town feel, with a big university, lot of energy, and these rolling hills/farms/picket fence style plantation housing around it. I've always wanted to live in the south and Auburn would be perfect.
Florida, least where I live, doesn't feel like the South. Still mostly Trump supporters, mostly white, but not that Southern culture. There's really not much culture in Ft Myers, it is bland in a way.

Naples is for the very old and very wealthy
Posted by Plaza21 on September 25, 2020, 5:02 pm, in reply to "Thanks!"
It’s about 15-20 miles south of where I live, and it’s really as far south as you can live. But thing about Naples is it’s full of millionaires. It’s like Beverly Hills. But for very old people. You could be walking around down there at 8pm on a Friday night, and it would be completely dark and quiet. Mansions pitch black. No lights on in anyone’s house. Everyone in bed. Or they just died. Could be that too. Last year I met a woman from Naples on some app. She said she was in her 30s and had some nice pics of herself in a bikini. I also still have her contact on WhatsApp and this is her picture. She’s in the middle.
So I thought this could be good. She asks me to meet her down in Naples at this upscale outdoor mall at like 4pm on a Friday. I had no idea what I was getting into. I meet her there and I can see the pics were her, but probably from 20 years ago. She looked in her high 40s/50s. She was an Italian woman from Long Island. Her name was Marcella. She tells me her family ran funeral homes in NY and she was funeral director in FL.
And she was hardcore Italian like one of the women you’d see on Mob Wives. I asked her if her family was part of the mob and she was evasive so maybe they were. We had like 2 drinks and some fish tacos and it cost $75. I’m thinking this place sucks. She says let’s go to this cigar bar. So we walk over there and it’s full of really old men, and like 45-60 yr old women. And this apparently is considered the young vibrant spot in Naples lol. So we end the “date” at like 7pm and am thinking I’m never going back down there. Not my scene. If you’re 70 it’s probably awesome.
I’d def pick St Augustine over Naples. Cocoa Beach is nice too.

you have to accept reality. it was stolen but there is no way to prove it.
What's the best place for the (relatively) young and very wealthy?*

If you want tranquility, I like my place. I can go to the beach most days and they’ll be hardly anyone there. It’s like having your own private beach to yourself. Even at sunset. Really there’s very few people that ever are outside doing stuff either. I thought when I got here I’d be seeing a bunch of girls jogging everyday. Not so. Nobody goes outside here. Granted it’s hot, but the people here I think are so used to warm sun all year round they take it for granted. I was running everyday in the winter hardly ever saw anyone else. I just couldn’t believe it. So maybe it could just be this area is so lazy and relaxed that people like being home bodies. And this was pre-pandemic. Can’t blame it on that.
So if you want the energy, restaurants, culture of a big city, models or wannabe models everywhere, Ft Lauderdale/WestPalm/Miami is where you’d want to live.
Ft Myers, Cape Coral, do have bars/nightlife/golf/fishing but it’s kind of like small town slower pace version of Florida. Granted I’m generalizing but Miami is the Latin vibrant city culture, Orlando is for kids with Disney, Panhandle is country/partying, and my area is mostly just relaxation.
