Cause I can never quite get comfortable with the idea of bugs, rodents, reptiles and god knows whatever else having easy access to you lying flat on the ground. Previous Message i was planning on going hiking this weekend but my partner in this endeavor has become a late scratch. this actually sort of excites me, because the original plan was to "play it safe" and stay in a hotel and leave at "daybreak" (and get back on the road by dusk). i've been there and i've done that. without her in the mix though, im now contemplating a bit bolder of a mission... and one that would involve me sleeping outside in the elements for what is believed to be the first time since a backyard slumber party in the fourth grade. i popped into an REI yesterday to do a bit of scouting... i found that they have some tents and some hammocks. ive seen enough to know that both could be viable options for sleeping. but there may be benefits for one over the other- for example, sleeping on the ground would probably require additional padding; sleeping in a hammock would probably require some kind of covering. ideally id be packing as light as possible. i was just hoping to hike one day... cover a lot of terrain... sleep... hike back the following day. anyone done something like this before? also, the area im targeting isnt super risky, but there are black bears and bucks and other animals that under the wrong circumstances i suppose could pose a threat. any recommended precautions? author's note: i fancy myself as an outdoorsman due to my enthusiasm for nature and wilderness, but from an experience standpoint im still mostly an amateur.

I camped out doors a ton. Everything from having a set up base camp, hiking in, to (as a kid) floating stuff on a homemade raft into the Wabash river and sleeping on a island. there is a whole process of handling your food if there is the threat of bears. You should google that. You need to think about water. Either hike enough in with you or have a device to filter it for you. It sounds like a hammock would work for you. I would consider going with a buddy the first time. im partial to the hammock idea because its easier to pack and carry. per the ish, i see your escaping to the outdoors this weekend as well. enjoy! In Lake Tahoe. It’s like a legit log cabin where you need to build a fire each night to stay warm. But it’s got beds, so we’re sleeping in those. No TV. Just some tunes, booze and fishing for trout. but never done so overnight. and youre right, the main concern i guess would be animals attracted by food... but in the eastern united states, while there are bears, they are black bears. that being said, im sure at sundown i could be a little more concerned if there are noises, which is why i came here with a couple questions. thanks for sharing your experience. to be clear, thats how i would draw it up 99 times out of 100. every once in awhile i like to do something that pushes the comfort level a bit into a new experience, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity for it. scares me in general out there, for obvious reasons. That would be awful. Don't want to be Hugh Glass (although I love books about him). In Yellowstone we had the bear spray but I didn't really sleep a wink. What's your plan?
